OEC Foundation partners with Operation School Bell

The OEC Foundation, Inc. over the past 15 years has donated over $140,000 to the Assistance League of Norman (ALN) for its Operation School Bell program. The tradition continued in October when the Foundation's board of directors granted $10,000 to the organization."We are proud to support such a generous cause in the community," said Joyce Wallace, OEC Foundation board president. "Operation School Bell is a staple each year for those who cannot afford to send their children to school with the supplies and clothing they need." Operation School Bell allows volunteers to assist students from Norman area schools in selecting new school clothes in a retail-like environment. The Operation Round Up® donation will assist in purchasing shoes for 500 students.

“Surveys have indicated students who benefit from Operation School Bell experience a considerable increase in positive classroom behavior, student confidence and engagement with peers and/or school activities," said Rose Marie Sondergold, grants and awards chair for ALN.

In addition to ALN’s grant, other nonprofits and individuals were also approved for donations at the Oct. 26 meeting. Norman Lions Club and Regional Food Bank each received a $5,000 donation to assist with eye exams and glasses, and food for the kids' backpack program, respectively. Individuals and families received a collective $6,829, earmarked for hearing aids, dentures, eye glasses, dental care and orthodontic work. Grants from the Operation Round Up program are made possible thanks to OEC members who elect to round up their electric bills to the nearest dollar each month. The accumulated change is granted to organizations, individuals and families in OEC’s service area via the Operation Round Up program. Grant recipients are not required to be OEC members, and grants may not be issued for utility bills, rent or mortgage payments.
